4 men flee stolen car after police chase at HRBT, crash in Ocean View

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A brief police chase on Interstate 64 ended in a crash at Ocean View on Monday night in Norfolk.

Virginia State Police said a soldier assigned to the Hampton Roads Tunnel Bridge work area received a blow to his license plate reader for a stolen Dodge Caliber SUV at around 7:34 p.m. Monday.

The soldier attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued to drive, fleeing east on Interstate 64.

They took the 4th View off ramp in Norfolk, then turned to Ocean Avenue. They continued to drive at “high speed” until the vehicle struck a 2008 Mitsubishi Galant from behind at the intersection of West Ocean Avenue and Granby Street.

During the accident, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a guardrail. Four men got out of the stolen Dodge and fled in several directions.

Police were unable to apprehend the four men, but located a gun and ammunition inside the Dodge.

The Mitsubishi was manned by one person, the male driver. His injuries were not considered life threatening.

The scene had cleared up at 9:25 p.m.
