James Piot leads after 18 holes in American amateur final

James Piot will take a 1-lead over Austin Greaser in the afternoon round of the 36-hole final of the 121st US Amateur at Oakmont Country Club.

The second 18 will start at 2:30 p.m.

A fifth-year senior at Michigan State and a native of Canton, Michigan, Piot was quite tied with Greaser, of Vandalia, Ohio, heading for the 18th hole in the morning round on Sunday.

Greaser, a junior from North Carolina, had not played the last hole in the previous five games this week. But he bombarded his drive and hit a short iron approach.

Piot hit his second shot from up close and, after Greaser’s three putts, Piot’s birdie was conceded.

On the morning of the 18th, Greaser took a 1 lead in the ninth before Piot equalized the game with a normal save.

Greaser visited Church Pew’s famous bunker at # 4, but blew up and hit normal.

More sand trap prowess followed as Greaser came out of a bunker on the green at No.5 for a birdie to win the hole.

Piot struggled to hit the fairways on the top nine, but he stayed close. He won three consecutive holes and 9, 10 and 11, the last with a birdie conceded.

A large contingent from the state of Michigan – male and female players – showed up to watch Piot.

Greaser led the 14th for 378 yards for the second straight day and had two putts for a birdie to win the hole and tie the game.

After losing three consecutive holes, Greaser has won three in a row of the last nine.

The second 18 will be televised from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Golf Channel and from 4 p.m. to 4 p.m. on NBC.
