The London Nationals survived a tough early St. Thomas test to advance to the second round of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs.

Nats captain Jeff Burridge scored twice in the third period, giving him six goals and nine points in the six-game series, for a 7-3 victory to eliminate the Stars on Saturday at the Joe Thornton Community Center. London will face Chatham in the Western Conference semi-finals.

London quickly took a three-goal lead and Lucas Chard provided the second-period winner on the power play. The Nationals also scored two shorthanded goals.

Rylan Bowers had five goals and eight points in the series for London. Tristen Roberts led St. Thomas with four goals and nine points.

ALLIANCE CHAMPIONS: The London Jr. Knights AAA U16 squad completed a two-game sweep with a 5-3 victory over the Brantford 99ers to claim the Alliance Championship title Saturday at Western Fair. Rob Crowther’s team, which reached the quarter-finals of the recent OHL Cup tournament, won the opener in Brantford 7-3 on Thursday.

They previously beat Elgin-Middlesex in a three-game semi-final and swept Cambridge in three games in the first round. Brantford and London tied for the top of the Alliance regular season standings this season.
