Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni Tease ‘SVU’ Fans With Nod to Emmys Character Tension

Will they, or won’t they?

The minute we learned that Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni would be sharing the stage as Emmy presenters on Monday night, we had to wonder what the show’s writers would make them do.

Because those desperate to see the former ‘Law & Order: SVU’ co-stars (Meloni is now on ‘Organized Crime’) come up close and personal (or, at least, their characters Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler). ) were rooting for some kind of action.

And they got it! Almost. Well not really.

Hargitay and Meloni were part of a pre-show skit that had them chasing an Emmy-wearing thief on a video screen, a chase that turned into reality when the couple burst onto the stage with the suspect, a seized the prize and turned it over to the authorities.

Admiring the Emmy, Meloni said, “Oh, that’s pretty cool.”

Smiling, Hargitay (who had her strappy, sparkly shoes slung over one shoulder), noted, “I’m fine; I’ve got two.”

(Hargitay has a prime-time Emmy, for her “SVU” role in 2006. Her second Emmy is a 2019 News and Documentary Emmy, for “I Am Evidence.”)

Needless to say Meloni gave her a see.

Eventually, on the mic, he said, “Well, Mariska, we did it.”

Together they chimed, “Again.”

Then things got serious. They turned to each other. They leaned in for what might be a kiss, then – pulled away. Meloni set about listing nominees for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and the time was up.

It was a nearly missed kiss and played perfectly in the interest of fans seeing Benson and Stabler having a relationship. (In real life, Hargitay and Meloni are happily married.)

Well, better luck next time. After all, the pair will be sharing screen time on Sept. 21, when “Law & Order,” “SVU” (on its way to its 24th season!), and “Organized Crime” will share a three-way crossover. Everything is allowed then!
