After the release today of another Congressional report exposing the alarming number of toxic contaminants found in many popular baby foods and formulas, Highman understands the concern and outrage of parents. “In a 2012 study published by Dartmouth University, my small business first discovered arsenic in brown rice. Arsenic is found naturally in agricultural soils, and we quickly learned that rice readily absorbs arsenic. Nature’s One was blinded by the news – we had let our parents down; I was indignant at myself “, Highman said.
From that day on, Nature’s One has focused on “purity and nutrition” for all of its products. Highman adds, “We want to support the optimal growth and development of today’s babies, not distract from their critical development in a time when harmful chemicals and toxins will disrupt the process. When a business is truly wants to do the safest children’s foods, they are able to reduce or successfully eliminate harmful toxins – it’s a choice every business should make.“Highman continues,”I don’t wait for the government to drive me to this destination. It’s up to me to have a conscience for my consumer. It costs us more to go through this process, but is there really a price you wouldn’t pay for removing a toxin that is harmful to children during their critical developmental years or later in life? I say no!”
Nature’s only path to purity
Today, Nature’s One strives to avoid synthetic ingredients whenever possible and refuses to use ingredients treated with harsh chemicals like hexane (a known neurotoxin used to treat vegetable oils and acids important fats used in infant formula). “We take a fairly straightforward, no-hype approach to infant formula ingredients: the ingredients should be easy to understand, sought after for their purity, complete in nutrition, and avoid synthetics where possible.. ”
In the interview, Werner also gives insight into the new state of the art of Nature’s One, $ 40 million establishment dedicated to organic nutrition for babies and children. It is the first and only facility in the world designed to manufacture smaller, artisan-style batches of infant formula that ensure the highest quality control. The CBS Mornings team followed Highman around the facility where he shared details about the company’s commitment to product purity. Highman explained that every detail of the scientific development of a formula, from the cleanliness of the facility and environmental monitoring, to the sourcing and meticulous testing of ingredients, is all part of his vision to achieve the highest levels of quality. He sums up the simple purpose of the business by saying: “We want to help every ‘human baby’ be the best they can be by providing the purest, most nutritious infant formula at a reasonable price. It is our social responsibility as a company to achieve these goals. “
What should parents do?
When asked what a caregiver should do after hearing these reports of toxins, Highman explained, “I would start over by looking at the Clean Label project website and choosing products and brands recognized for their commitment to purity. Clean Label Project is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to educating consumers about the real facts behind a brand’s ingredients. Many brands, like Nature’s One, are not found on supermarket shelves due to the high cost of entry imposed by retailers. However, their products can be easily found and purchased online.
